Clonakilty Macra notes from 06-08-09

Macra na Feirme Clonakilty

Club secretary Edel Ronan represented the Carbery Region at the Miss Macra Festival held in Dundrum House Hotel, Co. Tipperary. Thirty members of Clonakilty Macra and several more members from the Dunmanway, Innishannon and Ballinascarthy clubs travelled to support Edel over the weekend.

The festival began on Thursday, when Edel along with the twenty four other contestants, met with their host families. Friday’s activities included lunch with the National President of Macra, Michael Gowing, and a trip to the Rock of Cashel. The serious work was on Saturday. Each of the contestants had their interviews from 9am, while the afternoon was spent in the hairdressers and beauticians. Saturday evening consisted of a special Miss Macra Mass and later that evening, the girls were interviewed on stage. There was a sports day on the Sunday and the Gala Banquet was held that evening. The winner of International Miss Macra 2009 was due to be announced at midnight but it was nearly 2am before the official results were known. Wexford’s Miss Macra Lucy Lalor was placed third, Meath’s Miss Macra Angela Wall was announced in second place, while Carbery’s Edel Ronan was crowned the 2009 International Miss Macra.

Edel is a native of Skibbereen and has been a member of Clonakilty club for six years. She is a primary school teacher and has had prior success in Macra as part of the National Public Speaking Winners Team 2008 and the National Drama Winners Team 2009. Edel will now represent the festival for the next year. On behalf of Edel and the club we would like to congratulate the organisers, Clonulty-Rossmore Macra on another marvellous weekend.
