Adams to launch new booklet on Michael J Murphy this weekend
Local TD Gerry Adams will be launching a new booklet on the life of seanchaí and folklorist Michael J Murphy in Dundalk library this Saturday 20th July at 3.30pm.
Murphy was an author, storyteller, playwright, broadcaster, photographer and a socialist republican with contacts with such people as Kathleemn Clarke, Maud Gonne MacBride and Padar O’Donnell. His father counted James Connolly among his personal friends.
In the days before the internet and easy access to books, storytelling was how local history was passed down and taught to the next generation. For anyone that is interested in Irish folklore, Michael J Murphy will be a name that is familiar to them.
Murphy retired from the Department of Irish Folklore, University College Dublin, in 1983 and died in 1996 in Walterstown, Castlebellingham, Co. Louth. He is buried, along with his wife, Alice, in Darver cemetery.
Gerry Adams will read short extracts from the booklet and will sign copies.
