Biden receives Freedom of County Louth on visit to Cooley Peninsula
US Vice President Joe Biden was awarded the freedom of Co Louth during his visit to Carlingford on Saturday.
During his visit to the Cooley Peninsula, Mr Biden – whose relatives hail from the area – visited the village itself, Fitzpatrick’s of Rockmarshall, Lily Finnegan’s, Carlingford Heritage Centre and Kilwirra church and cemetery in Templetown.
Many locals turned out to meet the Biden family, including Irish and Leinster rugby star Dave Kearney who hails from nearby Willville.
Mr Biden was presented with a set of gold and silver cufflinks, hand crafted by local goldsmith Garrett Mallon while a piece of artwork crafted by Rebekah Kahn was given to the vice president’s wife, Dr Jill Biden. A wooden bull, made by local craftsman Joe Lawler, was also presented to Mr Biden to mark his being made a free man of the county.
The Vice President’s great grandfather was James Finnegan from the Cooley Peninsula, who was born around 1845 and died in 1895 in Pennsylvania. His great grandmother Catherine Roche was also from Co Louth.
