DkIT cleaning staff to get ‘hardship’ vouchers as compensation for change in pay frequency

Cleaning staff at Dundalk IT are set to get ‘hardship’ vouchers worth up to €300 each as compensation for moving from weekly to fortnightly pay.

According to a report in today’s Irish Independent, the workers demanded compensation for the inconvenience of moving to the new pay system.

The changeover happened when their employer, contract cleaner ISS, was taken over by Grosvenor Services last year.

A Labour Court recommendation said the transfer of undertakings between the two companies took place on August 1 last year. But Siptu complained there was no consultation about the payroll change and sought compensation worth two weeks’ wages.

It argued there was hardship caused to members by the move and the change amounted to a change in their conditions of employment.

The employer argued it would provide assistance in any hardship cases “but no evidence of such was provided”.

It offered interest-free loans and vouchers worth between €50 and €250, based on each employee’s hours of work as a gesture of goodwill.

It said it was not in a position to offer compensation as the workers would suffer no financial loss.

Deputy court chairman Tom Geraghty noted the “positive steps” taken by the employer to resolve the dispute. He recommended an increase of €50 per person in its voucher offer.
