Dundalk FC held by Sligo Rovers in league opener

Dundalk FC endured a frustrating start to the new season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Sligo Rovers at Oriel Park last night.

Vinny Perth’s side had to come from behind to ensure a point on a night when both Robbie Benson and Patrick McEleney picked up injuries.

Benson’s night was ended as early as the sixth minute when he was fouled by Sligo goalkeeper Ed McGinty after bursting through on goal. After a lengthy delay for him to be stretchered off, Pat Hoban stepped up to take the penalty but saw it saved by McGinty.

Dundalk dominated after that with Hoban, substitute Sean Murray (pictured above) and McEleney all going close but it was the visitors who took the lead on 43 minutes.

Jack Keaney stepped up to take a free kick and managed to curl it around the wall and past Gary Rogers to the bottom left hand corner.

Dundalk were back on level terms just four minutes into the second half. Hoban chested down to the inrushing Murray who rifled a debut goal to the net.

The home side pushed for a winner after that but their best efforts were either just over or straight at man of the match McGinty.

Dundalk host Athlone Town in the Leinster Senior Cup on Monday night before travelling to Ballybofey for the next league match against Finn Harps on Friday.
