Dundalk FC slip up allows Rovers to open five point lead at the top of the table
Dundalk FC will have to make up a five point deficit over the remaining 12 league games after slipping up at the weekend.
A 1-1 draw with St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday night, coupled with Shamrock Rovers beating Finn Harps 3-1, means it is very much advantage Rovers in the title race.
It was a below par display from Vinny Perth’s side against Pat’s although they were gifted the lead on 23 minutes when a mistake at the back allowed Stefan Colovic to set up Patrick Hoban (pictured above) for his sixth goal of the season.
The lead would last less than two minutes however as a Shane Griffin cross picked out Robbie Benson who slotted home at the near post on his first return to Oriel Park after departing last winter.
Both sides had chances to win the game after that with Dan Ward hitting the post shortly after before Greg Sloggett heading agonisingly over from Michael Duffy’s cross on 64 minutes.
Dundalk now travel to Dalymount Park this Friday.
