Dundalk Swim Club take on Leinster’s finest

A total of ten members of Dundalk Swim Club competed in the Leinster Division 2 Championship last Sunday at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin, the home of Irish Swimming.

Dundalk swimmers put in some fine performances at the event which culminated in the Swimming Club’s Girls 11&Over relay team securing a silver medal with an impressive 200m Medley Relay time of 2.38.11. The relay team consisted of Sadhbh Mullen, Amy McEvoy, Katie Farrell and finally Faye O’Rourke who took the team home with a blistering final 50m Freestyle leg of 33.52.

In the morning session Bronagh Harmon and Amelie Friel swam first for Dundalk taking 5 seconds and 1 seconds respectively off their Personal Best (PB) times in the 100m Backstroke 11-12 Age Group, while Sadhbh Mullen and Faye O’Rourke both finished in the top five in the 100m Backstroke 13-14 Age Group and Amy McEvoy knocked 14 seconds off her PB.

Matthew Messin won the Clubs first medal of the day securing Bronze in the Boys 100m Breaststroke 11-12 Age Group while Cedric Saavedra shaved 4 seconds off his PB in the same event. Emilia Rutkowska also secured a PB in the 100m Freestyle.

Amy McEvoy took home a second bronze for Dundalk Swim Club when she posted a 3.23.46 PB in the 200m Breaststroke 13-14 Age Group.

In the afternoon session opener, Bronagh Harmon and Katie Farrell both scored PBs in the 200m Freestyle as did Cedric Saavedra in the 100m Back. In the 100m Breaststroke Amy McEvoy missed out on a second Bronze by 0.69 of a second while Bronagh secured her third PB of the day. Next, Katie Farrell was in action in the 100m Fly event knocking 10 seconds off her PB.

Sadhbh Mullen narrowly missed out on a medal for the second time in the day when she posted a PB in the 200m Individual Medley 13-14 Age Group. Faye, Katie and Amy also performed well with Dundalk Swimming Club taking four of the top 10 places. No surprise then that this quartet followed up that success by ‘swimming’ off with the Silver medal in the 200m Medley Relay.

Meanwhile on the other side of the city, Junior club members Hugo Friel and Emily Coyle were competing at the Glenalbyn Swim Club gala in South County Dublin. Hugo won a Gold, Silver and Bronze in his 25m freestyle, 25m butterfly and 100m IM events while Emily secured PBs in her events across the day.

Dundalk Swim Club are always on the look out for the next generation of local swimming talent. The Club are particularly interested in hearing from parents of swimmers in the 7-12 age group who can comfortably swim 25 meters (one length of Dundalk’s pool) Front, Back and Breast stroke and those aged over 12 who may have some club swimming experience.
