Dundalk up to second with victory in Derry
Dundalk FC moved up to second in the SSE Airtricity League table after a 2-0 win away to Derry City in the Brandywell last night.
Goals in either half from Sean Murray and Pat Hoban proved the difference on the night as Vinny Perth’s side moved to within four points of early leaders Shamrock Rovers, who have played a game more.
After Hoban was denied the opener by a stunning save from Peter Cherrie on 24 minutes, the visitors took the lead 13 minutes later when Michael Duffy’s cross was chested down by Hoban into the path of Murray, who fired in his third goal of the season.
Derry had their chances, with Gary Rogers tipping over free kicks in either half from Barry McNamee and Junior but Declan Devine’s side passed up their best chance a minute before half time when Ally Gilchrist fired over from close range.
The game was put beyond doubt on 52 minutes when Hoban converted from the spot past substitute goalkeeper Nathan Gartside after Cherrie was injured in the incident which led to the penalty.
With next week’s game against Bohemian FC postponed due to international call-ups, Dundalk are next in action when they host Cork City at Oriel Park on Friday March 29th.
