Family looking to find new home for dogs who lay by owner’s side as he passed away

The family of a local man who passed away in his sleep last Friday are seeking a new home for his two terriers Sally and Jack.

The dogs, aged eight and six, were found lying with their beloved owner Robbie McGee at his home in Hyde Park.

The 68-year-old is said to have “lived for both of them” with his family anxious to find a new home for his greatest loves.

“His dogs were just there keeping him company and they were so loyal,” his niece Yvonne Dawe told

“It’s unreal how much they can sense. They’re gentle little things. They were pretty scared on Friday with everything going on but the doctor said she would reckon he had passed away peacefully with the dogs by his side.”

Following Mr McGee’s death Louth SPCA inspector Fiona Squibb issued a Facebook plea seeking a new home for the dogs. The post, which has been shared almost 3,000 times, said: “To say they are heartbroken is an understatement. Sally and Jack have lost their owner. He passed away yesterday and they lay with him till found.

“We took them into our care today. They cried so much on trip to the kennels, then were so upset to be behind bars. I know it’s a long shot but is there anyone has space on a couch. They just sit with you as they did their dad.

“I know if Robert could have he would have taken them with him, he idolised them and them him.”
