Fyffes pull the plug on Dundalk FC sponsorship after seven years
Dundalk-based banana distributors Fyffes has announced that its sponsorship of Dundalk FC has concluded after what it describes as ‘seven exceedingly successful years with the club.’
The sponsorship commenced seven seasons ago ahead of the 2012 season – at a time when the club had narrowly avoided relegation and closure – but had the ambition to achieve the level of success that was subsequently enjoyed under the management of Stephen Kenny and its squad of highly-talented players, some of whom having represented their country at different age-groups.
In a statement released to local media, Fyffes expressed its pride in having helped the club to achieve its on-field objectives, and congratulated players and club management on having recorded yet another notable League and Cup double.
Its managing director, Gerry Cunningham said: “In order to ensure that our sponsorship and corporate social responsibility programme remains current and in tune with on-going expectations and requirements, we customarily review all Fyffes commitments within a fixed cycle. In light of the success being achieved by Dundalk FC – and in acknowledgement of the acclaim it was bringing to Dundalk and the local community – we annually took the decision to extend our support, up to and including the 2018 season.”
This support, Mr. Cunningham added, included “significant additional expenditure ’ in terms of funding and executive time required to ensure the sponsorship was ‘widely communicated’ and that the Club gained full value from our involvement. ‘This activity included the production of four videos charting the Club’s rise to prominence, which have attracted over 1million YouTube views, here and globally,” he added.
“Partnering Ireland’s most successful football club of the past decade with Dundalk’s most internationally-recognised food brand, the link between Dundalk FC and Fyffes has been one that we have been honoured to maintain and, in that regard, we extend our wholehearted appreciation and thanks to all concerned, and wish them every success for the future,” Mr. Cunningham said.
“Furthermore, our current focus is on our ongoing commitment to supporting both local and wider sporting communities and grass root initiatives in Ireland through a myriad of sponsorship activities in which we engage on an annual basis. Amongst them is our new nationwide Fit Squad schools and clubs based programme, which has the promotion of children’s health and fitness at its core. Included also is our charitable work with Temple Street Children’s Hospital and our many other corporate social responsibility undertakings,’ he added.
In response, Dundalk FC’s Chief Executive Mal Brannigan said: ‘The Club would like to thank Fyffes, Gerry Cunningham and Emma Hunt-Duffy for their support shown to the Lilywhites over the past seven seasons, during which time both organisations have benefitted from the partnership. The Club wishes Fyffes well for the direction it is now pursuing and looks forward to helping them develop their commitment to the promotion of children’s health and fitness and their other community initiatives.”
Dundalk FC have announced that all jerseys have been reduced to €40 for adults and €30 for juniors as a result of the announcement.
They added: “Any jerseys bought prior to today with Christmas in mind and whose swing tickets are still attached, will be able to collect a €15 voucher from either the store at Oriel Park or the Christmas outlet at the Long Walk on presenting the top.”
