Greene triumphs in Fitzer’s 5k
Darragh Greene won the Fitzers 5k Fun Run for the third time in four years when it took place at the Marshes Shopping Centre on Saturday.
Organised by local TD Peter Fitzpatrick, this was the seventh year of the event which just like recent years was run in aid of the Maria Goretti Children’s Respite Centre in Lordship and RehabCare Centres.
Greene, who played for Fitzer during his time as Louth GAA manager, was first to cross the finish line in 16 minutes exactly. This was 13 seconds ahead of second placed Maurice McMahon, who was a further five seconds quicker than Declan Toal in third.
Greene, who runs with Dunleer AC, had previously won the event last year and in 2016.
The first female finisher was Amy Bulman in a time of 00:18:29, which was good enough for 12th overall. Second female was Laura Mathews in a time of 00:19:21 with the third female being Leah Mooney in a time of 00:20:05.
Also participating in the race was Sophia Griffin and her family from The Happy Feet for Sophia charity. They were invited to take part to raise awareness of their bid to raise €100,000 for Sophia to receive life changing surgery in America. They are planning a fun run fundraiser later in the year with Deputy Fitzpatrick helping them with the organisation of the event.
Talk of the Town was at the race and caught up with Peter Fitzpatrick afterwards…
