Hoban hits four as Dundalk FC book EA Sports Cup final spot
Dundalk FC cruised past Bohemian FC on a 6-1 scoreline at Oriel Park last night to book their place in the final of the EA Sports Cup against holders Derry City last month.
Currently the only major trophy not residing at Oriel Park, Vinny Perth’s side put their visitors to the sword early on with Patrick Hoban grabbing a hat-trick inside the opening 14 minutes.
The club’s leading scorer would go on to score four with Patrick McEleney and Daniel Kelly also on target in what was a resounding win.
The breakthrough came after just four minutes when Hoban was slipped through by Michael Duffy to fire left footed past Michael Kelly in the Bohs goal.
He then doubled the lead five minutes later when he met Duffy’s corner with a neat flick to the bottom left hand corner.
His third then arrived on 14 minutes when he headed Daniel Cleary’s cross to the net.
Any hopes Keith Long’s side had of getting back in the game were all but ended on 42 minutes when McEleney made it 4-0 with a cool finish after breaking in from the left.
Things got worse for the visitors when Hoban scored his fourth and his side’s fifth on 51 minutes. This time the striker followed up with a volley to the net after Jamie McGrath’s initial effort had been saved.
Bohs did pull a goal back when Ross Tierney fired in off the right hand post on 62 minutes but it was Dundalk who would have the final say as Daniel Kelly made it 6-1 in the 71st minute when he finished off a superb cross from the left by McGrath.
Dundalk now advance to the final against Derry City on Saturday September 14th. They will also face the Candystripes in their next outing this Friday night when they travel to the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium in the second round of the FAI Cup.
