Irish Blood Transfusion Service in Blackrock this Wednesday
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) will hold a mobile clinic for those who would like to donate blood this Wednesday from 5pm to 8.30pm at St Francis NS in Blackrock.
The service provides the blood and blood products needed in hospitals to help patients. In 2017 Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda required 2,711 units of blood.
Blood transfusions may be required for routine surgical procedures and cancer treatment. A car accident victim may require up to 30 units of blood. The average adult has between 10 and 12 pints of blood. A blood donation is just 470mls – less than one pint.
If you are fit and healthy, aged 18 to 65 (between 65 and 70 years if you have donated in the last 10 years) over 7st 12 lbs (50kg) and have not donated in the last 90 days, please make a special effort to come along. Please eat at least a light snack in the three hours before donating.
