Irondad Declan Loy brings home new Guinness World Record

Just an ordinary dad, Declan Loy father of three now known as Irondad, who took up triathlons 20 months ago has broken the Guinness World Record of Completing the most Ironman 70.3-mile triathlon’s races within 12 months.

One race equates to 1.9 km swim a 90 km cycle and 21.3 km run and over the course of the last 10 months Declan, who is originally from Newry but now lives in Castlebellingham, has completed 25 races breaking the record. The record breaking race was completed at Ironman Otepaa, Estonia on Saturday. Declan aims to complete a further five races to hit his target of 30 70.3 triathlons.

You could be forgiven if you didn’t believe six months ago he would get this far, after he only started training for Ironman events just 20 months ago.  He has travelled the world in pursuit of the world record to countries such as Cyprus, Sardinia, Turkey, USA, Austria, Dubai, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, UK, Riccione, Spain and many more countries still to go. To date he has swam 39.9 km, Cycled 1,890 km and Run 441 km.

Declan’s reason for the venture is to raise funds for a not for profit organisation called Super You which teaches teenage kids tools to manage their mental and emotional well-being.

When asked why Super You, Declan comments “over the last 3 or 4 years all I have heard of is one teenager after another committing suicide and this touched my heart as I would never want to see this happen to any family.  Especially when I know key tools that could help anyone not to do such things.  I felt drawn to help! Hence Super You was born”.

Declan says: “Whatever we focus on, we get more of, hence if we focus on failure, failure comes or if we focus on success, success comes.  If we focus on how we cure a problem the problem grows, but if we focus on digging up the routes of the problem so the problem doesn’t exist, then we can change society for the better.”

He has proven the Impossible Is Possible by his World Record Challenge.  And who could argue with his moto after he has travelled the world, run a business, family and completed a Guinness World Record at the same after 20 short months of training.  Declan’s next race is the Islander 70.3 triathlon on June 23rd in Colchester England.
