Louth principal hits the headlines after calling on age restriction for smartphones for children
A local principal has hit the headlines after setting an age restriction for children using smartphones.
Paddy Martin of St Mochta’s NS in Louth Village featured in The Irish Daily Mail and will appear on the Dr Ciara Kelly Show on Newstalk at 12 noon tomorrow to discuss the matter further.
Paddy spoke of the dangers of the internet for children and the necessity to introduce measures to protect kids online.
“Nobody wants their child to be put in the hand of a predator. If they knew the extent of it and how bad it was, obviously there wouldn’t be a parent alive who would be in favour of them,” Paddy said of smartphones.
Paddy said many principals are shocked byt the age at which children are being given smartphones, with many using their communion money to get them or being given an old phone of a parent or older sibling.
He said: “I think it has taken a long time for the penny to drop about the dangers of them from loads of different perspectives. It is absolutely a trigger for anxiety, for lack of sleep, for listlessness, for dents in concentration.”
