Towell misses out on place in final Ireland squad

Former Dundalk FC midfielder Richie Towell has been omitted from the final Republic of Ireland squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League double header with Denmark on Saturday and Wales on Tuesday at the Aviva Stadium.

The Brighton player, who has impressed on loan at Rotherham Utd this season and last, was named in Martin O’Neill’s provisional squad for the two matches last week, leading to hopes of a first senior cap for his country.

However Towell was one of six players cut from the final squad earlier today, along with his former Dundalk team-mate Daryl Horgan and former Shamrock Rovers star Graham Burke.

The Ireland squad in full is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Darren Randolph (Middlesbrough), Colin Doyle (Hearts), Sean McDermott (Kristiansund BK)
Defenders: Cyrus Christie (Fulham), Matt Doherty (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Shane Duffy (Brighton & Hove Albion), Richard Keogh (Derby County), Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United), Kevin Long (Burnley), John Egan, Enda Stevens (Sheffield United), Darragh Lenihan, Derrick Williams (Blackburn Rovers)
Midfielders: Jeff Hendrick (Burnley), Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Alan Browne (Preston North End), Shaun Williams (Millwall), David Meyler (Reading), Harry Arter (Cardiff City*), Callum O’Dowda (Bristol City), James McClean (Stoke City)
