Williams goal sends Dundalk crashing out of Leinster Senior Cup
A Dean Williams goal helped Athlone Town pull off a shock 1-0 victory over Dundalk FC in the fourth round of the Leinster Senior Cup at Oriel Park last night.
The on loan Shamrock Rovers striker came off the bench to beat Aaron McCarey with a low shot in the 66th minute to help the Midlanders to their first competitive victory since August 2017.
It capped a poor night for Vinny Perth’s side, with the 11 changes from last Friday’s 1-1 draw at home to Sligo Rovers failing to stand out.
Dundalk’s best opening of the first half came when Lido Lotefa blazed over a Dean Jarvis cross.
Lotefa went close again early in the second half before Athlone took a shock lead on 66 minutes when Williams fired low to the net from Kaleem Simon’s cross.
Dundalk pushed for an equaliser late on but their best opening was spurned in injury time when Georgie Kelly fired wide of an open goal after Athlone goalkeeper Aaron Myles flapped at a corner.
