Work on revamp of Fairways Hotel expected to get underway soon
Phase two of The Fairways Retail Park project is expected to get underway shortly with the revamp and renovation of the hotel on the old Dublin Road site.
The Fairways Hotel closed its doors in January 2015 with a new retail park built on site that includes SuperValu as an anchor tenant opening last October. To date a Costa Coffee and pharmacy have also opened there with other retail units available to buy or to let.
That was phase one of the project with the renovation of the hotel the second phase. It has been earmarked on advertising hoardings on the site that work is set to proceed before the end of this year with workmen having been spotted on site in recent days.
The Fairways Hotel, formerly the Glendevlin, was developed in two phases, firstly in the 1960s and subsequently in 2000.
The original 44 bedroom hotel, function room and nightclub consists of a three storey flat roof structure. Phase two was added 16 years ago and comprises a conference centre with six syndicate rooms, a large reception area and a three storey accommodation block comprising 56 bedrooms. The total footprint of the building extends to approximately 0.7 hectares (1.75 acres).
Around 80 jobs were lost when The Fairways was officially closed on January 5th 2015.
Once the hotel is completed, the third and final phase will see the construction of the residential element of the site.
It is understood that 93 new housing units, comprising 49 townhouses and 44 apartments in four blocks, will be built on site. The breakdown of this residential area would be 14 four bed houses, 17 three bed houses, 18 two bed houses, 35 two bed apartments and 9 one bed apartments.
